"I want my classes to be challenging. I want
students to say, 'I had to work hard, but I really learned a
lot.'"
Dr. Lisa Carloye, asssistant professor of biology |
Active, engaged teaching and learning
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), a project sponsored
by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The
Pew Forum for Undergraduate Learning, has confirmed what members of
the Elon community have known for years. Elon is among the nation's
leaders in actively engaging students in learning.
The classroom experience and co-curricular activities are blended
in a seamless learning environment. Study abroad, internships, leadership,
volunteer service and undergraduate research make up the five "Elon
Experiences." |

"The spirit of this place is remarkably constant;
people care about each other and express it freely."
The Rev. Richard McBride, chaplain |
Strong, supportive community
Throughout its history, Elon has remained a close-knit caring community.
Weekly College Coffee gatherings and chapel services, daily events
and sidewalk conversations fit easily into the rhythm of campus life.
People know each other's names and support each other in good times
and bad. This special atmosphere is universally regarded as a source
of Elon's success. |
"The faculty and staff at Elon have created
an environment in which students come first. I matter here."
Jennifer Guarino '03 |
Student-centered environment
Elon's strength comes from a distinctive culture that encourages the
best in students. Faculty members choose to teach at Elon because
they thrive on the mentoring relationships they build with their students.
Each program and student service is evaluated regularly to measure
its effectiveness in meeting student needs.

"Our facilities are a tremendous asset. Students walk
onto campus, see the wonderful facilities and beautiful grounds, and
fall in love with this place."
Susan Klopman, dean of admissions
Outstanding campus
Elon has developed a national reputation for its remarkable
campus. Recent new facilities include the first two pavilions in the
Academic Village, the Carol Grotnes Belk Library, Dalton L. McMichael
Sr. Science Center, Danieley Center, the R.N. Ellington Health and
Counseling Center, Rhodes Stadium and Irwin Belk Track. Many other
facilities have been fully renovated, expanded and outfitted with
the latest technology.

"People at Elon are always looking for ways to do things better.
That kind of spirit inspires all of us to do our best every day."
Dr. Leo M. Lambert, president
A tradition of innovation
Elon has developed programs that integrate learning across disciplines
and encourage students to understand themselves as global citizens
and to put their knowledge into practice. A four-credit-hour curriculum
and 4-1-4 academic calendar give students opportunities and motivation
to explore the world, discover new interests, investigate ideas and
direct their studies.

Effective planning, core values
and a clear mission

|
"Elon has a remarkable strength that is the
envy of many institutions -- to create its own destiny."
Noel Allen '69, chair, board of trustees |
Elon has benefited from visionary leadership and a commitment to planning
at every level. Because of constant evaluation and a culture that encourages
change, Elon has not strayed from its core mission: providing a dynamic
and challenging undergraduate curriculum grounded in the traditional
liberal arts and sciences and complemented by distinctive professional
and graduate programs. |
