| Deepen the Elon Experiences For more than two decades, Elon has been recognized for its flagship programs, known collectively as the Elon Experiences. They reflect the values of the institution -- service to others, intercultural understanding, a productive work ethic, a commitment to civic responsibility and the ability to learn independently. Study abroad Elon
sends more undergraduate students to study abroad than any other master's-level
university in the nation. U.S. News & World Report ranks Elon's
study abroad program among the best in the nation. The Isabella Cannon Centre
for International Studies in Carlton Building provides a prominent location
at the center of campus. Participation rates will continue to increase as
new scholarship programs provide funding for students who do not have the
resources for international study experiences. Internships Three out of four Elon students complete internships prior to graduation, gaining valuable experience in their fields and building work portfolios. The next goal is to increase participation to 80 percent and expand internship opportunities across the curriculum, following the lead of the School of Communications which has added an internship director position. Service The Kernodle Center for Service Learning coordinates more than 82,500 hours of service in the community each year. Eighty-eight percent of recent graduates have volunteered in the community. New partnerships with national organizations, including Project Pericles and Campus Compact, are increasing civic engagement and promoting stronger partnerships between the University and the local community. NewCentury@Elon is expanding connections between academic and service learning programs, increasing the number of course-related service projects and adding international service opportunities. Leadership With more than 130 student groups, Elon provides outstanding opportunities for students to learn about organizational challenges and lead their peers. More than half of graduating seniors have held at least one leadership position. To expand this program, Elon will increase student participation to 70 percent and consider adding an academic minor in leadership. Undergraduate research Undergraduate
research is one of Elon's most prominent academic success stories. The number
of students participating in the program has more than doubled in the past
four years. About 10 percent of 2004 graduates had participated in research
projects and presentations. To develop a premier undergraduate research
program, Elon is increasing the number of student-faculty research teams,
summer research opportunities and presentations at national research forums.
New endowments and scholarships are providing support for the scholarly
work of students and faculty. Documenting success The Elon Experiences transcript serves as an official record of a student's co-curricular work and is a companion document to the academic transcript. A new Elon Experiences office in Moseley Center provides facilities to involve more students in creating transcripts. Students also use these facilities to develop Web-based portfolios to showcase their skills and accomplishments, giving prospective employers access to their class projects, papers and other materials. |
