Goal 2: Provide facilities to support
excellence
Elon is developing an Academic Village for the arts and sciences,
constructing premier facilities for the Martha and Spencer Love School
of Business and making other campus improvements that enhance academic
and student life programs.
The Academic Village: a new center for liberal
arts and sciences
Elon's
growth has created the opportunity for an exciting new complex that
meets the need for additional student housing while creating a second
campus focus for the arts and sciences. The classically designed Academic
Village complements the historic quad built around Alamance Building.
The first two Academic Village pavilions, which opened in fall 2002,
are the Isabella Cannon International Studies Pavilion and the William
R. Kenan, Jr. Honors Pavilion. Faculty members and students live and
study together in a community setting, gathering in seminar rooms
and an inviting outdoor amphitheatre. The Ella Darden and Elmon Lee
Gray Pavilion opened in 2004 and houses the political science and
public administration departments and includes facilities for the
Elon University Poll. Three additional pavilions are planned, providing
offices, classrooms and labs for liberal arts departments. A larger
classroom building will anchor the south end of the Academic Village,
enclosing a new quad bounded on the north by McMichael Science Center.
Carlton renovation: a global focus at the center
of campus
The fully renovated Carlton Building puts international study
at the heart of the campus. The Isabella Cannon Centre for International
Study, outfitted with technological resources and cultural objects
from around the world, serves as a gathering place for international
students as well as a launching point for Elon's study abroad opportunities.
The unique El Centro de Español allows students, faculty and
staff to learn conversational Spanish and prepare for travel in Spanish-speaking
nations. The foreign language media center gives students access to
international audio and video, newspapers and journals. A high-tech
publishing and design lab allows students to work in groups on writing
and presentation materials.
Danieley Center: meeting the growing demand for
student housing
Over the past few years, 10 residence halls and a commons building
have been constructed in the beautifully wooded Danieley Center on
the east edge of campus. The area offers room for more growth; the
challenge is to add support facilities for the growing student population
in this area. New connections to the central campus are needed, allowing
better access and relieving congestion on Haggard Avenue. In addition
to new housing, students are already taking advantage of the new R.N.
Ellington Health and Counseling Center, a NewCentury@Elon initiative
that was completed in 2001.

The Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center: a business
education facility designed for the global economy
The new home for the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business
will be designed with a focus on engaged learning, supporting a business
program that is integrally connected with the liberal arts. Classrooms,
labs and multi-purpose spaces will promote group projects and faculty-student
interaction. Technology will be everywhere, including wireless network
access, a finance trading room that receives market data from around
the world, a digital theater wired for multimedia presentations and
computer labs with the latest business software. The center is currently
under construction north of the McMichael Science Center and completion
is set for fall 2006.
Downtown Elon development: good for the community
and the campus
The University will continue to support development of downtown
Elon as a center of services for the growing community. New restaurant
facilities have improved the street appeal of Williamson Avenue. Plans
envision more retail businesses and public spaces in the area. Improvements
have also been completed on Haggard Avenue, slowing traffic to increase
pedestrian safety.
Belk Track: comprehensive Division I sports facilities
With
the addition of Belk Track and White Field to the north athletics
complex, Elon's intercollegiate sports facilities are second to none.
Rhodes Stadium, Latham Baseball Park, Rudd Soccer Field and Hunt and
Tucker practice fields provide comprehensive facilities for men's
and women's sports.
A convocation center: a place to gather and celebrate
Elon University and the Alamance County region need a facility
for large gatherings, premier speakers and entertainers, and indoor
athletics events. Elon has outgrown Alumni Gym, placing severe limitations
on scheduling athletics events and other campus functions. The dream
of a multi-purpose community center is taking shape, and NewCentury@Elon
calls for a feasibility study to determine what resources would be
needed to make this facility a reality.
