The last campus plan was prepared by Spillman Farmer Architects in 1990. The major recommendations of that plan were to tie the north and south sections of the campus together by eliminating a major parking lot and building a new student center on the north campus opposite historic Alamance building on south campus.
Other recommendations were to renovate the gym and physical education facilities, renovate Carlton and construct additional Greek and east campus housing. Approximately 20 of 25 recommendations of that plan have been implemented, plus the construction of a state-of-the-art library and science center.
During the past 10 years, the university has grown continually. Enrollment has increased from 3,000 full-time students to 3,961 in the fall semester of 1999, with corresponding increases in facilities and staff. New residential housing has been provided for 320 students, and older facilities have been upgraded. The campus acreage has increased from 275 acres to 502 acres.
The purpose of the New Century@Elon Campus Plan for the First Decade is to address new strategic objectives of the university as it enters the 21st century.
