At the initial meeting of the Facilities Master Plan Committee, Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs Gerry Francis reported the president's preliminary planning objectives for Elon University:
- Elon will continue to grow slowly, but not at the expense of academic quality.
- Elon will add new graduate programs.
- The sophomore housing requirement will be maintained.
- New architecturally significant entrances to the university from east and west will be constructed.
- Elon will have a nationally distinctive academic mission, and the campus will enjoy a broadly based national reputation.
- The campus will maintain an intimate feel; students and learning will remain at the center of all the university does.
- Elon will always seek to acquire strategically located property.
- New athletic programs will be considered (lacrosse, track and field) and facilities enhanced accordingly.
- The university will have to provide additional teaching, activity and living space to accommodate a slightly larger institution.
- The university and the town will develop a common approach for vehicle and pedestrian traffic, signage, landscaping and community aesthetics.
- Steps will be taken to enhance the concentration of academics in the historic campus area.
- Steps will be taken to enhance the commitment to campus green space, expand upon the pedestrian nature of the campus and locate parking to the periphery.
- Steps will be taken to a scale and design on future facilities that blend with the existing campus architectural aesthetic.
