The NewCentury@Elon Campus Plan for the First Decade is a vision for a maturing campus that will build upon the success of the last decade and meet the new strategic goals of the university as outlined under Goals & Objectives. During the on-campus study, the campus community clearly indicated that physical improvements to the campus should address these general attributes:
- Ensure the centrality of the liberal arts curriculum.
- Integrate technology throughout the undergraduate program.
- Promote interactive, collaborative learning.
- Connect knowledge attainment with the entire student life experience.
- Continue to enhance a spacious and beautiful landscape setting.
- Maintain the pedestrian nature of the campus.
- Preserve and renew existing historic buildings and build new complementary architecture.
- Improve the way campus and town facilities relate to one another.
This section summarizes the general planning strategies that evolved during the planning process and are basic to the Campus Plan. Each subject is detailed under the corresponding section in the report.
Relationship of Elon University with the Town
- Develop west and east intersections of the bypass with Haggard Avenue as entrances to both the town and the university.
- Formulate a cohesive plan for Haggard Avenue improvements from the bypass to the university: including landscaping, lighting, signage, paving, removal or screening of negative features.
- Develop a cooperative plan for downtown improvements to include a pedestrian mall, town circle, uniform lighting and site developments that enhance the four-block core area.
- Encourage development of shops, restaurants and service facilities that cater to the student needs.
- Monitor housing development to be attractive to off-campus living for students, graduate students and faculty.
The Academic Village
- Re-establish Alamance building as the focal point for the liberal arts.
- Restructure Carlton as the Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies and revitalized home for the departments therein.
- Develop the area east of the south campus core for smaller scale undergraduate and graduate programs creating an "academic village."
- Reserve Long building for future liberal arts expansion, perhaps for psychology.
- Develop a greenhouse at the McMichael Science Center site.
Technology
- Develop a Technology Center in the current Elon Elementary School building, the first floor of Smith Hall or another appropriate location.
- Extend the campus network to the remaining unserved buildings.
- Suggest locations for 24-hour computer labs.
Residential Life
- Develop replacement and new housing at Danieley Center. Consider placing faculty apartments in new residences.
- Expand Loy Center and locate Health Services there.
- Consider facade improvements to Jordan Center. Recapture Jordan Commons for student recreational purposes and relocate security to Elon West. (Ultimately, consider replacing Jordan Center with new housing.)
- Continue refurbishing of older residence halls.
- Create more informal fun spaces on campus. Consider an addition to Danieley Commons.
- Improve the Lodge property for student activities.
Business School
- Demolish East Building. Reserve the East Building site for a new business school with adequate parking.
- Consider locating a campus inn at this same location with approximately 48 rooms.
- Make interim changes in Long to provide additional faculty offices.
West Building
- Develop the West Building (the former Winn-Dixie store) for the following functions:
--Landscaping
--Physical Plant
--Security
--Print Services (perhaps with satellite locations on campus)
--Storage
--Weight Training (temporary)
--Campus Vehicle Storage
- Acquire the Pizza Hut for site development.
- Provide a tram and Cushman vehicle connection to the main campus.
The Fine Arts
- Consider a wrap-around addition on the north wing of the Center for the Arts to meet the expanded needs of music, art and dance.
- Consider a theatre addition to the Center for the Arts for theatre support.
- Relocate the dance program.
Future Convocation Center
-
Potential uses of a 9,000 - 10,000-seat convocation center:
--Convocations and campus-wide events
--Graduation
--Basketball and sports tournaments
--Ice Rink (provides extra length for floor events)
--Large-scale concerts
--Community events
- The center should be used for athletics offices and the dance program.
- Share parking with the stadium.
Physical Education, Athletics, Recreation
- Light recreation fields. Create a jogging trail around Danieley Center.
- Expand Koury Field House.
- Move athletics staff to stadium or future convocation center.
- Identify potential sites for new recreation fields for softball and soccer.
- If convocation center is not built, a third gymnasium is desirable.
- Expand pool facilities.
- Consider a future nine-hole golf course as either a college or joint venture project.
Support Facilities
- Relocate purchasing and accounting to Smith or Carolina. Perhaps combine with human resources.
- Study expansion of admissions back-up space in Powell.
