Elon University is located in the beautifully historic Alamance County. Burlington, the city adjacent to the town of Elon, features Alamance Crossing, a large outdoor shopping mall, a variety of restaurants and the beautiful Lake Mackintosh, an 1100-acre lake with canoeing, paddleboats and outdoor picnic facilities, just minutes from campus. It is home to the Burlington City Park Carousel, a handcrafted menagerie carousel built in the early 1900s by the Dentzel Carousel Company and featuring hand-carved animals. The county also includes historical sites, such as the Alamance Battleground and the WWII Homefront Museum.
The Company Shops Market, a co-op grocery store, recently opened in downtown Burlington and supplies the community with fresh, local food products. Just a short ride from Elon’s campus, the co-op is open seven days a week and features an organic coffee bar and fresh sushi.
Other shopping opportunities include Holly Hill Mall and Business Center, a newly renovated indoor shopping mall with a variety of restaurants, retail stores and events. The first and only indoor shopping mall in the county, Holly Hill is located just minutes from campus. Also nearby are the Tanger Outlets in Mebane, with more than 75 outlet stores and restaurants.
Three of the public elementary schools in the county offer Spanish language immersion programs, Elon, Smith and South Graham Elementary School. With the help of Splash! Language Immersion, several schools have established where all instruction is given in Spanish by native speaking teachers.
Local farms and wineries provide opportunities for community members to pick their own fresh fruits and enjoy some of the local wine the county has to offer.
