Introduction

The Essentials for Leadership is a workshop that has been carefully designed to provide leaders in nonprofit organizations the understanding and capacities they need to more effectively engage in leadership in their respective organizations.

In four, half-day sessions - spread out over two months - participants will engage in discussions and experiential exercises, receive instrumented feedback, and apply their learning about leadership to their back-home organization.

Course Outline

Session I: New Lens on Leadership

The focus of the first session is on different ways of understanding and practicing leadership. Participants will examine and decide the most effective ways to practice leadership in their organization.

Session II: The Who of Leadership

In this session we will move beyond the "what" and "how" and "why" of leadership to the "who." Questions we will ask include: Who is the person who shows up to engage in leadership? What does it mean to lead out of a deep sense of identity and integrity? What gifts and limits do you have as a leader? Participants will receive instrumented feedback in this session.

Session III: Leadership and Setting Directions

One of the essential tasks of leadership is to make sure the organization has a clear sense of direction. In this session the focus will be on the power of purpose, vision and mission. Participants will be asked to bring the mission and vision statements already developed for their organization, and they will have an opportunity to do additional work on them.

Session IV: Leadership and Navigating Change

Two questions will frame this final session: (1) How do you - the participant - cope with change? (2) How can you help your organization, and those stakeholders invested in it, navigate change? Instrumented feedback is included in this session.

The Workshop Facilitator

The primary facilitator for this workshop is Russ S. Moxley. For several years Russ was Director, Nonprofit Initiatives, at the Center for Creative Leadership, and in this role he led leadership development experiences for hundreds of nonprofit managers and executives. Now an independent consultant, the past two years Russ has led a program similar to The Essentials for Leadership for nonprofit leaders in Guilford County. The program will be co-facilitated by Mary Santiago of Developing Leaders @ Elon.
