Summer in the City: Elon in New York
Summer 2009 marks the inaugural Elon in New York program, which introduces rising juniors and seniors to life and work in the Big Apple. The program runs during Elon's Summer Session I in June. The program involves:
- an internship, which allows students to meet the university's Experiential Learning Requirement, the Love School's internship requirement.
- safe, modern and affordable dorm-style housing conveniently located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
- exploration of the dynamics of a professional business environment.
- opportunity to build professional skills, including resume preparation, interviewing and business etiquette.
Students will complete the program with valuable experience applicable to future internships and permanent, post-graduate employment.
Program Cost
The Elon in New York program costs $2750, which includes two semester hours of credit, programming, two weeks of housing and transportation via New York's MTA system.
Qualifications
Elon in New York is open to any rising junior or senior at the university. Qualified applicants should be interested in a business career but don't need to be a business major; career interests could include arts administration, social services, sports management, and traditional business careers such as finance, marketing and accounting. Applicants also must not have had an Honor Code violation within the past year. Interested students are encouraged to apply early, as the program will be limited to 20 students.
Internship
The Love School will provide each student with a two-week internship in New York. Internships vary, and include positions in the financial industry, the fashion industry, and more. To find out more about potential internships, make an appointment to meet with Kehaya Wescott, the Love School's internship adviser.
Professional Development Course
In addition to the internship, students will take part in a professional development course. Students will learn networking techniques, practice business etiquette, speak with executives, meet with Elon alumni and other business professionals, research industries and job opportunities, understand the difference between "professional attire" and "business casual," and get a running start for their post-graduate job search. The course will meet in the residence facility, making the commute to class convenient for all participants.
Housing
Housing for all students is located at 1760 3rd Avenue (at 97th Street). Your home in New York City will be a newly renovated high-rise facility located in the prestigious Upper East Side of Manhattan, only a block away from the Lexington subway stop. They will enjoy Elon-quality amenities in your double or triple room, including 24-hour security, in-room bath, 11-cubic-foot refrigerator, microwave, LCD TV-DVD combo, high-speed internet access, and local and long-distance phone service.
