Management Major - Human Resource Management Career Track

In order to achieve sustainable competitive advantage, organizations must attract, develop, and retain their human capital. With support from top management, Human Resources (HR) is responsible for this process. Not surprisingly, the demand for well-trained HR professionals has been rising over the last decade. For example, HR has been ranked as one of the 100 Best Jobs of 2016 by U.S. News and Randstad recently named HR as one of the hot jobs in demand.

The Human Resource Management Career Track was created to align with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)’s competency model for all HR professionals. SHRM is the global professional association/network for HR professionals, which has approximately 285,000 members from over 165 countries. This model includes four major competency clusters that a HR professional must possess: technical, interpersonal, business, and leadership. Coupled with the core courses within the B.S.B.A. curriculum, students enrolled in the Human Resource Management Career Track will accumulate knowledge and skills related to the four major competency clusters.

In regards to technical competencies, students completing the Human Resource Management Career Track will gain greater understanding of:

  • The effects of external factors and organizational strategy on HR practices;
  • Government legislation impacting HR practices;
  • The impact of staffing on organizational performance;
  • Developing effective training modules and evaluating their outcomes;
  • The impact of various compensation and benefits plans on employee recruitment and retention;
  • The importance of designing effective performance management systems to drive organizational performance;
  • Using HR analytics to evaluate HR practices; and
  • Creating and delivering HR products to clients.

By accumulating these competencies, students will increase the likelihood of attaining HR-related certifications before graduation, such as the Assurance of Learning Certificate offered by SHRM. In addition, students are encouraged to join our student chapter of SHRM and participate in SHRM-sponsored case competitions. Ultimately, the Human Resource Management Career Track prepares students for a successful career in HR or admission into top-tier graduate programs in HR (e.g., Master in Industrial and Labor Relations). Recent graduates of this track are employed throughout the United States as a recruiter, HR coordinator, or HR consultant at the following companies: Boston Consulting Group, KPMG, Bank of America, Kforce, Aerotek, CenturyLink and Thomas Pink.
