Additional
Program Options in Study Abroad
The Isabella Cannon
Centre for International Studies (ICCIS) is here to help you
with your study abroad needs. We strongly suggest meeting
with one of the international programs advisors in the
ICCIS when you are thinking about studying abroad through an
IEPA (Independent Elon Program Abroad) or Non-Elon
program.
You are REQUIRED to
complete and submit the paperwork included in the appropriate
packet prior to your IEPA or Non-Elon study abroad program.
Failure to submit all the required paperwork may result in
the inability to receive credit for your work abroad.
Studying Abroad on
an IEPA Program
An Independent
Elon Program Abroad (IEPA) is broadly defined as a
program abroad developed by a student or students in
conjunction with a faculty member, approved by a department
and the ICCIS, during which the student will be enrolled
full- or part-time at Elon. Elon credit will be granted
at the end of the program. Two examples of an IEPA
would be a 12-hour, semester-long internship with a Russian
university approved through the political science department
and the ICCIS, or a 4-hour independent study winter-term
program in Senegal developed between a student and a faculty
member.
Each IEPA students is
required to:
- Follow the appropriate process for independent
study, research or internship
approval.
- Register and pay for the appropriate number of Elon credit
hours.
- Purchase Elon’s study abroad insurance through the
ICCIS.
- Complete all necessary IEPA, Release and Medical paperwork
through the
ICCIS. Failure to submit all the required
paperwork may prevent you from
participating in your program.
Development and
completion of an IEPA requires focus and dedication. Few
IEPAs are approved and conducted each year. You MUST work
with the ICCIS when planning an IEPA.
To get a IEPA packet, meet
with an international programs advisor at the ICCIS.
Studying Abroad on
a Non-Elon Program
The definition of a
Non-Elon program is one that is not affiliated with Elon
University through an agreement. The two primary differences
between participating in an Elon-approved program and a
Non-Elon Program are as follows:
1. On a Non-Elon program,
you receive transfer credit, rather than direct Elon credit.
This can sometimes be problematic because Elon has a 4-credit
class system, and many institutions have a 3-credit course
system.
2. On a Non-Elon program,
you may not take any Elon scholarships or grants, including
but not limited to Presidential Scholarships and
Fellows Grants.
To get a Non-Elon
program packet, meet with an international programs
advisor at the ICCIS.
