Internationalization of
the Campus Plan
What is internationalization of the campus?
Internationalizing the Campus is an Elon University Academic
Affairs Priority. In 2003, two committees, one consisting of
faculty and one consisting of staff, were formed to look at
internationalization at Elon. The result was a set of goals
and objectives as well as a 4-year plan to internationalize
the campus. The plan was endorsed by the Joint Deans and is
now in its second year of implementation.
What does this plan aim to achieve?
The overall goal is to create a culture of
internationalization that permeates every aspect of life at
the University: the academic curriculum, faculty research and
art, residence life, financial aid and scholarship,
admissions, the library, teaching and learning, the Career
Center (job placements and internships), the Development
Office, the physical plant, and more. The purposes of
internationalization are multifold.
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits of internationalization. These
include, but are not limited to, an increased diversity in
the student body and in the faculty, a greater appreciation
of cultural diversity, engagement and collaboration
with international scholars and students at Elon with regard
to teaching, research, art and other university functions,
enhanced global citizenship for students, faculty, and staff,
and increased international job opportunities.
What's happening now?
To help energize the plan this year, the Isabella Cannon
Centre for International Programs has developed a new
initiative called the Country of the Month. The goal of the
Country of the Month initiative is to engage as many
different facets of the University as is possible to
celebrate a country’s culture, including highlighting
faculty teaching, scholarship, and art accomplishments
relevant to the country.
How can I learn more?
Below are links to two aspects of the Internationalizing the
Campus Plan. The first, Goals and Strategies, looks at the
overall plan in the context of ten specific goals. The
second, Four-Year Plan, details the goals specific to a
number of departments, offices and groups throughout Elon
University.
