The
primary purpose of this course is to provide an opportunity
for student’s to gain a fuller understanding of
strategies and challenges to socio-economic development
including health, education, and employment opportunities by
immersing themselves theoretically and tacitly in the
development strategies being undertaken in a relatively
underdeveloped region of a relatively developed third world
country.

Summer Internships in London

Summer Internships in
London allow Elon students to gain valuable international
work experience in a multicultural city during the week,
and enjoy its extraordinary range of activities on the
weekend.
Students will
apply for an internship for which they will earn Elon
credit. Unpaid internships are available in a
wide variety of disciplines and businesses, and could be
appropriate for almost any major.
International Summer School at the University of
Sussex at Brighton, England

The University campus is on the edge of Brighton, a
friendly city by the sea that could have been designed for
students. Brash, buzzing and lively all year round, Brighton
is an eccentric, tolerant and cosmopolitan place. The Sussex
campus is a refreshing contrast, set in open parkland, with
an excellent range of social and academic facilities. The
International Summer School provides an opportunity to meet
and study with people from different countries and cultures.
Courses are offered in a variety of areas, including but not
limited to art, business, literature, geography, political
science and European studies.

International Study Center at Herstmonceux

Located in the UK county of East Sussex in south-eastern
England, the International Study Centre at Herstmonceux
Castle is run by Queen's College in Canada. The program
provides students with a personal window on the world around
them. The area is rich in history and culture, boasting some
of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Frequent
study trips add even more to the experience. Courses are
offered in a variety of areas, including but not limited to
art, business, literature, geography, political science and
European studies.
France: Language and Culture - "Summer Study in Nice"

In this summer program, students will become
immersed in French language and culture, gaining language
skills and increasing their knowledge of French civilization,
history and family life in two classes totaling 8 hours of
credit. A city of roughly 400,000 people, Nice is located on
the French Riviera, an area known for is beauty and mild
climate. Nice is home to numerous museums, vineyards and
language schools, as well as a university.

Germany: Heidelberg Summer

Known for its sidewalk cafés, student pubs, and
friendly, relaxed approach to life, Heidelberg, Germany is
home to an ancient castle and Germany’s oldest
university. In this historic city, students have the
opportunity to take intensive German language courses, learn
about German culture and politics, and participate in
excursions and study trips. Students will earn six
hours of language credit, with the option of adding another
1-2 hours of credit through “mini-courses.”
In addition to studying with students from all over the
world at the International Study Center at the University of
Heidelberg, students will also enjoy an immersion experience
by living with German host families.

The Elon Study Abroad Program in Venice is designed to
help students achieve three basic goals: fluency in the
Italian language, an understanding of the Italian people and
their culture, and a deeper awareness of their own culture.
The academic program, hosted by the Istituto Venezia,
includes four weeks of intensive courses, each taught in
Italian. The Institute is located in Campo Santa Margherita
in the heart of Venice.
Japan: Media and Culture in Japan - not running

This course offers students the opportunity to explore the
media practices in Japan with an aim to investigate the
fascinating interplay between the mass media and the national
culture. The course will be based in 2 prefectures: Kyoto and
Tokyo and make one-day visits to nearby cities including
Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima and Yokohama.

Mexico: Intensive Spanish Language and Culture in
the Yucatan

Take language classes, visit famous archaeological sites
such as the Chichen Mayan Ruins, and live with local families
in the Yucatan Peninsula. This 8-credit language immersion
course is taught in various locations in the state of
Yucatan, Mexico and includes daily language instruction,
cultural activities and presentations, visits to ancient Maya
ruins and contemporary Maya communities, and two home stays
(one in an urban and one in a rural environment).

business and technology and their impact on

Elon Summer Study Abroad in Spain will offer students
immersion in the Spanish language (Spanish language course)
as well as an introduction to Spanish culture, mores, and its
contemporary history (GST course) for 8 total hours of
credit. The hilly land of Galicia, with lush green scenery
and rainy days, is situated in the northwest corner of the
Iberian Peninsula. Celtic music and green landscapes help to
shatter all the usual stereotypical images of Spain. Santiago
de Compostela, home to Elon's Summer Study Abroad
Program, is one of Spain's most well-known cultural
cities. It is primarily a historical and cultural treasure,
which was declared part of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity
by UNESCO in 1985.
*DOMESTIC COURSE* Call of the Wild: Alaska,
Nature and Imagination

This course will explore the force of the wild on
our imagination and our lives. Class begins and ends on
Elon's campus. Fourteen days in Alaska will take place in
the middle of the course. Students will reflect on their
perceptions of Alaska and their experience of nature before
canoeing and hiking in the Kenai Peninsula of Alaskan for two
weeks. In Alaska, they will have experiences in nature
and with the Kenai to gain an understanding of how
differently nature can impact our lives and our
imaginations. Readings in literature and natural and
cultural history will prepare them for the trip and help them
to reflect on the changes in their perception when they
return. Observing how others relate to and are affected
by nature will be the focus for their study of literature and
their examination of their own relationship to nature.

Founded by the Greeks more than 2,500 years ago,
Taormina is a historical and cultural treasure that has been
influenced by many conquerors over the centuries. Modern
Italian life combines with a sense of history perpetuated by
Greek amphitheaters, temples and the Ionian sea to create a
relaxed, friendly community. Students will experience
the everyday life, language and culture of the Italians
during this 8-credit program through intensive language
training and excursions to locations such as Palermo and
Mount Etna. Students will also have the chance to interact
with the local people of Taormina and Sicily. For more
