Kelli Burns, assistant professor in the School of Communications, presented a paper Sunday at the International Conference on Social Science Research in Orlando, Fla. The paper, titled "Reporting of Pre-election Polls in USA Today during the 2004 Presidential Campaign," examined how USA Today dealt with reporting data from the USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll in 2004, with particular attention to sampling error. The study demonstrated lapses in reporting of poll results. The conference, held in the Hilton Orlando/Altamonte Springs, lasts until Tuesday. The conference was sponsored by the Centre for Policy and Practice, an independent organization that supports research and its application to real-world questions. This work is interdisciplinary in nature and includes faculty from Education, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Economics, Criminology, Communications and Public Policy.
