Attentive faculty absorb talk about copyright
Indiana University Distinguished Professor of Law Fred H. Cate was a guest of the School of Communications and General Studies program this week. Cate spoke to two General Studies seminars and gave two talks on copyright.
Cate met with production faculty and talked about legal issues pertaining to film and video production.
He also conducted a faculty and staff session about copyright in the classroom. Cate emphasized how educational "fair use" is just as strong a concept as infringement. Cate talked about balancing these two interests and answered faculty questions ranging from posting readings on Blackboard to the use of copyrighted material in student-produced promotional videos for a non-profit organization to the use of artwork and music in lectures and student projects.
This was Cate’s fourth visit to Elon. In January 2004, he and his wife Beth each taught winter term courses at Elon.
