Parsons Does ACEJMC work in Kuwait

Paul Parsons, dean of the School of Communications, did a pre-accreditation review at Kuwait University Nov. 10-17 for the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Parsons sat in on several courses, many of which were segregated by gender.

"It was startling to see young women and men separated in classes," Parsons said.

Parsons said upper-level courses integrated the sexes in the classroom, but they still sat separately. The courses were taught in Arabic, which Parsons doesn't speak, but a translator was provided. He said he heard three English terms: George Clooney, spokesperson and eye contact.

"Through translation, I also was able to broadly assess course content in an effort to apply ACEJMC expectations regarding curriculum and instruction," Parsons said.
