Journalism Student Wins Scholarship
Lesley Tkaczyk, a journalism major who will graduate from Elon in spring 2008, was recently awarded the Mary R. Parisi College Scholarship, which promotes educational opportunities for established and continuing college students who have epilepsy and are legal residents of the state of Vermont.
Two $1,000 Scholarships are awarded, one in Parisi’s name and another in James A. Girard’s, to recognize them as outstanding Board Members of the Epilepsy Foundation. To be chosen, applicants must have at least two years with a medical diagnosis of epilepsy, must be currently on medication or not off for more than two years and must be a college student.
“This scholarship represents the very first positive moment in my life that can be attributed to epilepsy,” Tkaczyk said.“Today, instead of epilepsy being a challenge and disadvantage in my life, it is a blessing. This scholarship has served as a reminder for me that often good things in life come from the most unexpected places and for that I am very grateful.”
Tkaczyk, 20, is a Journalism and Communicaitons Fellow originally from Dummerston, Vt. She will earn minors in political science and international studies and is editor in chief of Phi Psi Cli, Elon’s yearbook. Last summer, Tkaczyk interned in the Accent Department at the Burlington Times-News.
