Course equivalencies

The following list of course equivalencies will help students who entered Elon in 2012-13 or earlier to decide whether to remain in their existing curriculum or move to a new curriculum. Students who entered Elon in 2013-14 will choose among the newly revised majors, but may already have completed one or more courses below, so the list of equivalencies will inform them of what requirements in the new majors already have been met.

COMMUNICATIONS CORE

  • Completion of COM 220 Digital Media Convergence (4) fulfills the new core requirement of COM 210 Web and Mobile Communications (1) and Creating Multimedia Content (3).

JOURNALISM

  • Completion of COM 230 Media History, Media Today or COM 234 Broadcasting in the Public Interest fulfills the new Journalism requirement of COM 250 Journalism in a Free Society.
  • Completion of COM 324 Television Production or COM 350 Web Publishing fulfills the new requirement of COM 315 Multimedia News Production.

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS

  • Completion of COM 323 Corporate Video or COM 350 Web Publishing fulfills the new Strategic Communications requirement of COM 322 Corporate Publishing.
  • Completion of COM 362 Communication Research fulfills the requirement of COM 362 Strategic Research Methods (name change only).

CINEMA & TELEVISION ARTS (formerly Media Arts & Entertainment)

  • Completion of COM 234 Broadcasting in the Public Interest or COM 236 Development and Influence of Cinema fulfills the new Cinema & Television Arts requirement of COM 256 Entertainment Media.
  • Completion of COM 314 Writing for Broadcast and New Media or COM 316 Screenwriting fulfills the new requirement of COM 316 Writing for Television and Cinema.
  • Completion of COM 356 Cinema Aesthetics fulfills the requirement of COM 356 Film and Television Aesthetics (name change only).
  • The new capstone course is COM 456 Producing for the Screen, which will be offered in Fall 2014 in place of (and fulfilling the requirement of) both COM 454 Producing for Broadcast and New Media and COM 456 Producing Narrative Cinema.

MEDIA ANALYTICS (formerly Communication Science)

  • Completion of COM 225 The Process of Communication fulfills the Media Analytics requirement of COM 260 Understanding Audiences.
