Teacher Education Program

Elon Teacher Education Portfolios

Portfolios provide teacher candidates with a way to demonstrate mastery of required standards. It is expected that products will be created in various courses and assembled into a Livetext portfolio as evidence of mastery of the standards.

While portfolio formats vary among programs, students who take CIS 220/Computers and Teaching will use Livetext to create the appropriate portfolio in that class and begin adding products that address some of the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). These national technology standards have been adopted by the state of North Carolina as the technology standards required of all NC teachers. Products will be added in subsequent courses to address additional standards.

Elementary Education

  • You will incorporate your products, created in each required course, into a comprehensive portfolio that addresses Elon's Teacher Education Conceptual Framework and other standards that North Carolina expects you to meet including technology standards.
  • The portfolio template you use will be organized according to the Conceptual Framework and will have products listed from various courses, and you will simply attach or link to them in the designated locations.
  • After setting up your portfolio in CIS 220, you will be instructed in subsequent courses regarding what products to add and where in your portfolio up through your student teaching semester at which time the portfolio will be assessed.

Middle Grades Education

  • You will incorporate your products, created in each required course, into a comprehensive portfolio that addresses Elon's Teacher Education Conceptual Framework, middle grades standards, and other standards that North Carolina expects you to meet including technology standards.
  • The portfolio template that you use will be organized by the national middle grades standards and will have products listed from various courses, and you will simply attach or link to them in the designated locations.
  • After setting up your portfolio in CIS 220, you will be instructed in subsequent courses regarding what products to add and where in your portfolio up through your student teaching semester at which time the portfolio will be assessed.

High School (English, Math, Science, History/Social Studies) and K-12 licenses (Physical Education/Health, Music, Foreign Languages)

  • You will turn in a technology portfolio that demonstrates your mastery of the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) that have also been adopted by the state of North Carolina.
  • The portfolio template that you use will be organized by the six technology standards, and while you will begin adding products in Computers and Teaching, standards that require you to demonstrate your ability to use technology in your teaching cannot be addressed until you are actually creating lesson plans in methods and other courses with field experiences including student teaching. Thus you will need to add products created in those courses as evidence of mastery of some of the standards. You will also need to write a reflection for each of the six standards that addresses your choice of products and why they meet that standard.
  • Handouts to guide you through the process will be distributed in Computers and Teaching or can be downloaded here.
    • Begin with the handout named Ideas for Products that lists the standards on one page and then on additional pages, describes appropriate and suggested products for each standard. Collect your products and attach or link to them in Livetext. (This is generally printed for distribution on green paper).
    • Next use the Technology Portfolio Rubric that will be used to assess your work, making sure that you have adequate products for at least the "meets" column of the rubric. (This is generally printed for distribution on yellow paper).
    • Finally, use the handout named Reflection Guidelines to guide you as you write a reflection for each of the six standards. (This is generally printed for distribution on pink paper).
  • The deadline for submitting your portfolio for its final review is mid-term of your student teaching semester.

Special Education

  • If your dual licensure is in elementary education, you will complete a single portfolio similar to the one described above for elementary education; however, the template you will use will have places for additional products specific to your special education courses to demonstrate your mastery of the special education standards.
  • If your dual licensure is in middle grades, you will complete the middle grades portfolio as described above. In addition, you will create a second portfolio from a template that includes only your special education courses where you will add products to demonstrate your mastery of the special education standards.
  • If your dual licensure is in a high school subject area, you will complete a technology portfolio as described above for other high school licensure areas. In addition, you will create a second portfolio from a template that includes only your special education courses where you will add products to demonstrate your mastery of the special education standards.
