SEM Alumni Spotlight

Tonya Albert, Museum Specialist, Gateway to the Gilded Era:

"You WILL use each and every class at school to progress, whether or not you know it. It doesn't have to be the actual lesson plan that teaches the lesson, but something personal a professor said in the class, a group project that went really well or an individual assignment - it all adds up one way or another. That one thing will come to you in an important meeting when you're the only one coming at an issue from a new and exciting perspective - all because you have a different education. One that is broad, yet detailed, needed, yet overlooked.""You WILL use each and every class at school to progress, whether or not you know it. Katie Coley, Director, University of South Carolina Outdoor Recreation:

"I am now the Outdoor Recreation Director at The University of South Carolina - my dream job, right out of Grad School. That is something that doesn't happen very often and I have my time in the LSM Department to thank for that -giving me a great foundation, supporting me in a hands-on internship experience, the academic knowledge to support the real world experiences and setting me on a path that truly led me to success."

Doug Palic, Youth Sports & Adventure Park Director, YMCA:

"Everything that I do here at the Kennett YMCA can be related to my time spent at Elon. From communicating with members to marketing my programs and maintaining the athletic fields, each of those responsibilities is connected to one of my Leisure and Sport Management classes (Business Communications, Sport Marketing, Facility Maintenance and Management)."

"What made my educational experience complete was the willingness of my professors to work with me to help and push me to meet my personal goals. "

Durice White, Event Marketing Representative, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital:

"What I appreciate the most about my major was how close we were. I feel like the best part of my major was the support and encouragement that we received from one another. Putting on events with the Society and the event management class helped me find the passion that I had for event planning and marketing. I have been able to use the knowledge that I learned in class and apply it to my job."
