CHN 121. ELEMENTARY CHINESE I 4 sh
An introduction to Chinese language and culture, this course assumes no prior knowledge. Practical, conversational usage of the language is stressed, as is study of the cultures of China. No prerequisite. 
 
CHN 122. ELEMENTARY CHINESE II 4 sh
This course is designed for students with some prior knowledge of the language and serves as a systematic review within a cultural context. Practical, conversational usage of the language is stressed, as is the study of the cultures of China. Prerequisite: CHN 121 or placement at this level. 
 
CHN 221. INTERMEDIATE CHINESE I 4 sh
This course is designed for students who have mastered the basic concepts of the language. Speaking skills and character writing within a cultural context are further developed. Prerequisite: CHN 122 or placement at this level.
 
CHN 321. ADVANCED CHINESE I 4 sh
This course introduces more complex linguistic structures in Chinese while placing an increased focus on intercultural awareness. Intermediate to advanced reading, writing and speaking skills continue to develop through increasingly sophisticated topics. Strong emphasis is placed on oral communication through small group activities and projects in which students express themselves using connected discourse. Proficiency goal on the ACTFL scale: Intermediate High/Advanced Low. Prerequisite: CHN 221 or placement at this level.
 
CHN 372. ADVANCED CHINESE II 4 sh (experimental course)
This course is a continuation of CHN 321. It continues to introduce complex Chinese linguistic structures and vocabulary while placing a focus on intercultural awareness. Students will examine film, electronic and print media to gain an in-depth understanding of the Chinese traditional values and its recent social changes. Strong emphasis is placed on oral and written communication skills through individual or small group activities and projects in which students express themselves using connected discourse. Proficiency goal on the ACTFL scale: Intermediate High/Advanced Low. Prerequisite: CHN 321 or placement at this level. Offered spring.

 

CHN 473 Chinese Culture and Society 4 sh (experimental course)
The course introduces students to the important issues and recent changes of Chinese culture and society in the Chinese language. Students develop their language ability to discuss abstract topics along with their critical analysis skills and intercultural competence. Requirement in level: Complete 322 or permission by the instructor. Offered fall.
