History Internships

The Greensboro Historical Museum

The museum offers several internships for Spring 2010. The Museum, located in downtown Greensboro, includes collections running from decorative arts to toys and textiles. The archives contain family papers, newspapers, photographs among other items.

Collections Research Internship
This intern will assist assist in collecting and organizing local veterans’ stories, stories for a computer database featured in the upcoming exhibition Voices of a City: Greensboro North Carolina. Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum (Sedalia, N.C. – 15 minutes away from campus)

The director would welcome interns who are interesting in pursuing careers in museums tourism, research or restoration. The site staff work with you and your advisor on a suitable project, which might include helping with archival projects, artifact care, oral history, marketing and public relations, and maintenance of the site (as more buildings are restored). Orange County Historical Museum (Hillsborough, N.C.)

Their projects vary but they try to suit the interests of the student. Some projects include collection inventory, archive inventory, school program creation and implementation, research for creating a pamphlet on historical African-American figures in Orange County or research for a temporary exhibit. Reynolda House Museum of American Art (Winston-Salem, N.C.)

Alamance Battleground

The battleground is the site of a battle related to an uprising of “Regulators” in 1771. It also has a log cabin dating from 1780, which helps illustrate life on the colonial frontier. Potential interns here have the opportunity to learn about the operations of a North Carolina state historic site, interpretation, historical preservation, site development, artifact acquisition and care, research practices and marketing strategies.

Other internships

For students who can do internships over the summer or Winter Term in areas other than piedmont North Carolina, there are many other internship possibilities, including state historic sites or National Park Service historic sites. There are many government, library, research and other opportunities in the Washington, D.C. area through the Washington Center program (contact Pam Brumbaugh in Career Services). If you have an idea you would like to pursue, speak with your advisor and Career Services to learn what you do to get academic credit for an internship.
