Elon University Home

Dear Band Director:

It is a pleasure to invite you and your large and small jazz ensembles to the 18th annual Elon Jazz Festival on Friday, February 21, 2014!  Our festival will afford your bands the opportunity to work with and be critiqued by professional jazz performers and educators.  Outstanding soloists will be awarded, and you and your students can benefit from the helpful workshops held during the event.

Several features will once again highlight this year’s festival.  First, one hour of renewal credit will be available for you when you attend the workshops.  I will send you written confirmation certifying your completion of the workshops (please show this letter and the schedule of events to your personnel director for their advance approval).  Also, I will schedule in advance audition times with you for any of your seniors who would like to audition for entrance for acceptance or scholarship into the Elon music program while they are on campus for the festival.  A special performance by the clinicians, additional guest artists, and the Elon University Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m. will close the festival.

2014 Festival guest artists and clinicians are Jeff Phillips, keyboard, and Craig Whittaker, saxophone.  Combined, they have over 50 years of experience performing jazz and working with middle, high, and college jazz ensembles.  I am very confident you and your students will enjoy working with both of them, and their feedback will be very valuable in continuing to improve the quality of your jazz program.

I hope you can join us for the event. It promises to be an exciting educational experience for all involved. Festival Guidelines, a Registration Form, and the Tentative Schedule are available on the website.  Please note the February 3, 2014 registration deadline. Should you need any more information, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Matt Buckmaster, Festival Host
