As a neuroscientist, my principal scholarly interests are in the areas of nutritional neuroscience, neuropharmacology, addiction and dependency, consciousness, and neurotoxicology. I currently have several active areas of research, including investigations of: 1) the relationships between cholesterol levels and cognitive function (in particular, components of cognition that are mediated by the prefrontal cortex); 2) the effects of nutritional supplements such as 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and kava on cognition; 3) Ultraviolet light dependency (i.e. "tanning addiction"); and, 4) various neurobiological aspects of human consciousness. I received a B.S. from Hobart College in biology and psychology, and a Ph.D. in biopsychology from Cornell University. Since 2003 I have been teaching courses at Elon in neuroscience, consciousness, and general psychology.
