| REL 342. Sexuality and the Social
Order This course is primarily a course about Christian Social Ethics. We will learn about the methodology, sources, and approaches to Christian Social Ethics by focusing on a particular topic, namely human sexuality. The topic of sexuality has long been contested within religious communities. As one of the most personal and intimate expressions of human personhood, it has proved the subject of intense debate for theologians, religious leaders, and their communities for centuries. The very history and contentiousness of the topic provides us with excellent resources for examining how Christian ethical debates have been carried out in regards to social issues. In this course, each student should become familiar with the history and various debates concerning sexuality and religion; understand the complex ways in which sexual debates reflect their embeddedness with particular social orders; learn how to critically analyze and evaluate moral argumentation, particularly religious moral argumentation; begin to develop her/his own methodology for moral argumentation.
