REL 344. Christianity and Social Justice

Christianity has a deep history of challenging social injustice and standing up for the marginalized within society. This course will examine both the roots of social justice within the Christian tradition as well as contemporary manifestations of the struggle for justice within Christian communities. Emphasis will be placed on employing a structural analysis of social problems that includes the role of religion and religious communities in both perpetuating and healing social injustice. Student engagement in service learning situations that deal with the problems of poverty, homelessness, race, immigration, violence, and environmental degradation will provide the focus for our examination of social problems.

By the end of this course, students should possess a set of tools that enable them to examine the relationship between religion and social problems; be able to assess the structural aspects that contribute to social problems, and demonstrate an understanding of the Christian tradition of social justice.
