| REL 362. Islam in America This course traces the history of American Muslim communities, the differences between the experiences of African-American Muslims and immigrant Muslims and the implications of their presence in the United States. The presence of Muslims in the midst of American society is approached from different perspective. The course introduces students to present debates within the Muslim communities about their status as a religious minority, their approach to integration, the emergence of Muslim American organizations and major social, political and religious issues these communities are facing. Particular attention is paid to various aspects of Muslim life in America, such as Muslim organizations, generational differences, gender, legal issues, converts and everyday lifestyles. We also discuss the presence of Muslims in the media, the emergence of Muslim media networks and the contribution of Muslims to education and knowledge in the United States. The course is framed by continuous inquiry about American Muslim identities and their impact on the relationship between the Islamic world and the United States and on the character of American society.
