Honors Program at Elon University
Elon began its Honors Program in 1974, and it has evolved over the years as Elon has grown and changed into a university with a number of different Fellows programs. The Program recently underwent a self-study and made significant program changes that took effect in the fall of 2003.
Mission
The Honors Program seeks to:
- Help Honors Fellows expand their minds by encountering new ideas in small, discussion-based, innovative liberal arts courses;
- Improve students' critical thinking, research, and communication skills;
- Provide an intellectual community in and extending beyond the classroom walls;
- Challenge and support Honors Fellows in the highest possible academic achievements, culminating in an independent thesis;
- Prepare students to excel in graduate or professional pursuits as independent, hard-working, open-minded, lifelong learners and honorable community members.
Program Benefits
- Small, innovative courses specially designed to challenge students, meet Honors Program goals, and mesh with the university's General Studies requirements so students from any major can benefit.
- $10,000 Honors Scholarship applied to tuition awarded to all Fellows in addition to a Presidential Scholarship of $4000 to 4500.
- Strong faculty support - as teachers, mentors, and advisors
- Senior thesis providing exceptional capstone experience for students in all majors working individually with faculty mentors
- Thesis preparation workshops for students and faculty mentors
- Grants of up to $700 available for thesis expenses
- Study abroad grant of $1000 available for Elon-approved study abroad programs
- Honors living and learning communities (Honors housing) available
- Distinctive advising through Honors Elon 101 sections and peer mentoring system
- Colloquium program where students attend speakers and cultural events outside the classroom
- Sense of belonging to a supportive community of bright and committed learners
