Elon Housing Arrangements Before and After Study Abroad

Students should plan for their housing abroad and their housing back at Elon upon their return BEFORE departing to study abroad.  Whether a student is living on campus or off campus, he or she should consult the following information and pages for housing during and after study abroad.

Before You Depart to Study Abroad

Students are required to read the Residence Life Frequently Asked Questions or visit the Residence Life webpage on study abroad in order to participate in any study abroad program.  Elon University has no control over off-campus apartments and strongly discourages students from signing year long leases if they intend to study abroad for a semester.  If a student has signed a year-long lease and will be abroad for a semester during the lease, that student is responsible for either finding a subletter or paying the terms of the rent while abroad. For more information or questions, contact Residence Life.

Affiliate and Exchange Programs

Students participating in Affiliate and Exchange programs will receive further information on their housing during the site-specific orientation.  Some programs will require students to apply and pay for housing directly to the program provider or a third-party housing provider.  Students should note that several programs do not guarantee smoke-free or same-gender housing.

Center Programs

Students participating in Center programs should log into their application homepage and fill out the apartment-mate or homestay preferences element.  The Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (GEC) staff will use this electronic document to assign students to their apartments, flats, or homestays.  If this element is not submitted, students will be assigned to any open space.  All Center apartments and flats are same-gender.

Winter Term programs

The cost of accomodations is included in the majority of the Winter Term programs.  Additional information on housing will be provided during the Spring orientation or the Fall STA course and can be found on program webpages.

Students participating in a campus meal plan and not taking a course on Elon’s campus during the Winter Term will be reimbursed for the value of Winter Term meals via a credit towards the spring semester billing.  ***This excludes the 200 & 300 block meal plans which do not feature a winter meal component.***

Upon Your Return From Abroad

Planning for your semester abroad should include planning for housing arrangements upon your return.  It is recommended that you consider and plan for your housing preferences (where and with whom you are living, on or off campus, etc.) before studying abroad.  The sign-up processes for on-campus housing differ between the fall and spring semester.

Please note that these instructions apply only to students living on-campus, and that all policies are set by the Office of Residence Life.  Please read the Residence Life Frequently Asked Questions and the Residence Life wepage on study abroad for more information.

Fall Semester Abroad

Students studying abroad in the fall semester will complete a housing application for returning students in order to secure on-campus housing for the spring.  This application is generally posted on the Office of Residence Life website in November.  This application applies only to students seeking to be placed in residence halls that do not require a lease, such as the Colonnades or Sloan.

Students seeking to be placed in residence halls that do require a lease such as the Oaks should check E-Net to find a student who is looking for someone to take their space.  In this case, the student giving up the space will complete a lease-transfer form and name the returning student to take their spot.  Residence Life will confirm the transfer with the returning student.

Spring Semester Abroad

Students studying abroad in the spring semester will go through the normal housing process.  Residence Life sends out information about the housing selection process each spring.  Because coordinating rooming arrangements is more complicated from abroad, it is advisable to make plans (and back-up plans) before your departure.

Winter Term programs

Students will maintain their arranged campus housing over the Winter Term and through the spring even if they are not taking a class on campus.

Students participating in a campus meal plan and not taking a course on Elon’s campus during the Winter Term will be reimbursed for the value of Winter Term meals via a credit towards the spring semester billing.  ***This excludes the 200 & 300 block meal plans which do not feature a winter meal component.***
