Non-Elon Study Abroad Programs

Non-Elon Study Abroad Program Policies
The Isabella Cannon International Centre (ICIC) requires students to attend Elon-vetted study abroad programs unless there is a compelling academic reason to attend a program not reviewed and vetted by Elon. Elon University offers more than 50 semester programs, 30 Winter Term programs and 20 summer programs. The International Centre has assessed the academic components as well as student life and student support services on each of these programs. The ICIC works closely with the faculty and staff on each of these programs.

Definition of Non-Elon Study Abroad Program
A non-Elon program is one that is not affiliated with Elon University through an agreement. Elon will approve study abroad at such a non-Elon program if there is a compelling academic reason.

Petition Submission Deadlines

  • Fall and Summer Programs: April 30
  • Spring and Winter Term Programs: December 1
Students should submit petitions for approval.  Once you have received Elon's approval, you will be e-mailed and told the next steps at Elon before applying to the non-Elon program.

Cost
Elon will charge a non-refundable $525 administrative fee for all non-Elon semester study abroad programs once the petition has been approved.  Program costs are paid directly to the non-Elon program and are set by the program provider.

Enrollment Status
A student is not considered an Elon student while participating in a non-Elon program. However, if a student’s petition is approved prior to the non-Elon study abroad experience the student will not need to re-apply to Elon upon return. Your @elon.edu email address will remain active during your semester abroad.

Transfer Credit
Students who follow the proper procedure and complete the course approval process before enrolling in a non-Elon study abroad program may receive transfer credit. Transfer credit is not guaranteed, and is given on a course-by-course basis to be decided by the Registrar’s Office. Courses with a grade of "C-" or better are transferred and the hours earned transfer as well as the course itself. Grades do not transfer; therefore, GPA is not affected. Semester-hour credit will transfer the same (e.g., 3 hrs. for 3 hrs.). Students should keep everything related to coursework abroad: syllabi, course descriptions, class notes, papers, exams, etc.

Experiential Learning Requirement
A non-Elon study abroad program DOES fulfill the Experiential Learning Requirement.

Elon and Non-Elon Financial Aid/Loans
Students who study abroad with a non-Elon program are not able to use any Elon financial aid. This includes travel grants received with merit-based scholarships. However, students may be eligible to use any federal funds for which they qualify, such as a Pell Grant, Stafford Loans or Parent Loans. To do this, students will need to talk with both the ICIC and the Office of Financial Planning. Students must arrange to meet with both offices as soon as they can so the necessary paperwork can be started. Students also need to be aware that during the time they are away from Elon, the University will not be able to report them as an enrolled student. This period of non-enrollment could cause a student to go into repayment on loans if they have borrowed prior to this time. Students must contact the school or facilitator of the non-Elon study abroad program to inquire if they have options to assist with this problem.
