University Milestones: 2010-2011

From new facilities and groundbreaking scholarly research to distinguished speakers and outstanding performances on the field and on stage, the 2010-11 academic year yielded myriad accomplishments and marked the beginning of bold initiatives at Elon. The following timeline highlights some of the year’s major milestones. 


June

Elon Academy kicks off its fifth year with 26 new scholars. Sponsored by Elon University, the academy is an enrichment and college access program that gives promising Alamance County students with no family history of higher education the support they need to pursue a college education. Read more…

Construction begins on the university’s three newest and greenest residence halls adjacent to the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center. In addition to complying with LEED certification requirements, the complex surrounds a geothermal system that will provide environmentally friendly heating and cooling to five residence halls. July

Elon is recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education in its 2010 “Great Colleges to Work For” program, which honors institutions for best practices and policies, such as teaching environment, respect and appreciation, and confidence in senior leadership. Read more…

 

 

 

Dozens of students present their research on campus as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences, an eight-week program in which scholars work full-time on a project in collaboration with faculty mentors. Read more…

August

For the fourth consecutive year, Elon receives top marks in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” rankings. Elon is named the #1 Southern University in the “Focused on Their Undergrads” category and among the top 86 colleges and universities in the nation “where the faculty has an unusual commitment to undergraduate teaching,” as measured in a survey of college presidents, provosts and admissions deans. As part of the university’s sustainability master plan, Elon designates 56 acres of undeveloped land as the Elon University Forest. In addition to being the largest remaining intact forest in the Town of Elon, the Elon Forest safeguards thousands of species of plants, animals and other organisms. Read more…

In response to the rapidly growing demand for physician assistants nationwide, Elon trustees approve the establishment of a Master of Science program in physician assistant studies. The graduate program, which is Elon’s sixth, will enroll its inaugural class in January 2013. Read more…

After months of renovations, Alumni Gym, the home of the Elon Phoenix basketball and volleyball teams, reopens. The renovations, which include new theater-style seating, new flooring and basketball goals, and four large video screens, were made possible by a gift from trustee Jeanne Robertson and her husband, Jerry. Members of the Periclean Scholars Class of 2011 and two Elon faculty mentors travel to Sri Lanka to host a national conference to raise awareness of environmental issues in that country. Prior to the summit, the students spent three years creating sustainable relationships with environmentally focused organizations in Sri Lanka and linking school children in Alamance County with their peers in the island.

The Phoenix women’s basketball team wins its first Division I postseason game by defeating the University of South Carolina – Upstate in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
