"The Periclean Course Enhancement Goal: To raise the
level of civic engagement and social responsibility of the
students."
When the Pericles proposal was drafted, Elon wanted to
devise a way to tap the creativity and energy of as many
faculty members as possible. The long-term plan is to use
the ideas from this one-time round of $1,000 grants to (1)
provide the basis for more grant proposals to a variety of
funding sources, (2) provide ideas for future Pericles
projects and (3) contribute to the overall goal of Project
Pericles, namely to raise the level of civic engagement and
social responsibility of not only our students but the
entire Elon University community.
Those receiving the grants were asked to (1) devise some
assessment of their project (i.e., measure in some way the
success or failure of what they did), and (2) write a short
narrative report describing what they did and reflecting on
the impact. These were due within one month of the end of
the term in which the class was taught.
Successful grants will:

Be creative
-
Clearly be connected to the goal of enhancing the level
of civic engagement and social responsibility of the
students

Provide models for other faculty and classes
-
Be more than a "one shot" project (e.g., class
T-shirts that say "be socially responsible") as
much as possible; long-term impact and sustainability are
pluses
-
Have results that are assessable in some manner.
