New Student Convocation

This Saturday morning event is held after students have moved into residence halls and prior to the start of classes. Conducted outdoors under the oaks in an historic part of campus, this ceremony marks the beginning of each new student’s college career. Speeches to students, parents and faculty include a welcome from the president of the student government association, a first introduction of faculty and students and an overview of Elon’s Honor Code by a faculty member. The University’s President concludes with a charge to the students to take advantage of all the next four years have to offer. At the conclusion of the hour-long ceremony, students exit through a line of faculty, symbolizing their transition into the academic world. At this time, students receive an acorn to symbolize their potential.

The New Student Convocation provides a memorable beginning to the life and responsibilities of these emerging adults and it marks a transition for parents as they watch their children take the next step in gaining their independence.
