Division Priorities 2008-2009 (Elon University's Institutional Priorities can be found by clicking here) STUDENT ENGAGEMENT 1. Develop a student programming group to provide and promote programs (bands, comedians, special events) in the University-owned tavern, The Lighthouse. (Schmiederer) 2. Form a Town-Student Council of student representatives from neighborhoods surrounding the university to clarify student roles as good neighbors and responsible town citizens. (Patterson) 3. In collaboration with Campus Safety and Police, work with the Student Government Association and the Resident Student Association to provide ongoing education and programs about safety. (Patterson, Stein) 4. Work with the sustainability coordinator to further develop the Power Less and Recyclemania programs and to audit student life programs, organizations, and departments. (Stein) 5. Implement a new tailgating policy that clarifies expectations of student organizations to provide a more vibrant and respectful environment. (Schmiederer) INTEGRATION OF IN-AND-OUT-OF CLASS LEARNING 6. Staff and open the Office of Civic Engagement and coordinate with the Council on Civic Engagement a series of events to commemorate Elon’s “Celebration of 120 Years of Service, Leadership and Community Engagement.” (Jackson, Stein) 7. Develop and implement Life Entrepreneurs programs (retreats, webinars, workshops) for sophomores and young alumni. (Jackson, Waters) 8. Continue implementation of recommendations of the Student Transitions Committee and Career Services Committee to facilitate transition to life post Elon. (Jackson) 9. Continue revision of the student travel policy and publicize to the campus. (Waters) 10. Explore addition of one or two new residential learning communities (leadership, multi-faith, science and technology, and sophomore). (Stein) 11. Work with Service Learning Advisory Council to implement Social Entrepreneurship Scholars Program with first cohort of 17 students, courses, and workshops. (Stein) 12. Pilot Faculty Affiliate program in freshman halls in the Danieley Center. (McBride, Stein) 13. Develop training module and program assessment model, and pilot BASICS, “Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students.” (Jackson) CAMPUS CLIMATE AND COMMUNITY 14. Continue implementation of the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on Alcohol. (Jackson) 15. Begin implementation of the recommendations of the committee charged with expanding the role of the multicultural center to strengthen campus diversity programs. (Jackson, Stein) 16. Develop west lawn of Moseley as an informal space for student programs. (Schmiederer, McBride) 17. Build a campus meditation garden on the North side of Holt Chapel with an area designated to serve as a memorial for deceased students. (McBride) 18. Develop a strategic plan to increase and support diverse religious communities, including identity centers and attention to under-represented groups. ( McBride) 19. Implement the first year of the Odyssey Program, which provides recipients of selected, need-based, endowed scholarships with academic and social support. (Stein, Jackson) OUTSTANDING FACILITIES/ENGAGED RESIDENTIAL CAMPUS 20. Plan for and provide outstanding facilities:
SERVICES 21. Extend campus shuttle schedule to include Lowe’s Foods and new cinemas at Alamance Crossing. (Jackson) 22. Develop a web-site for off-campus students residing in neighborhoods adjacent to campus, including off-campus housing opportunities, local ordinances, services in community, etc. (Patterson) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT and PLANNING 23. Implement plan for student life staff professional writing and publications group. (Stein, Patterson) 24. Review progress in implementing action strategies of 2005-2010 Division of Student Life Five Year Plan; begin planning for next five year plan. (Jackson, Patterson, Waters, Stein, McBride, Schmiederer) 25. Expand professional development opportunities to include:
