Division Priorities 2007-2008 STUDENT ENGAGEMENT 1. Develop proposal for a domestic, senior capstone project for Leadership program. 2. Implement peer educators program for personal health and sexual assault programs. 3. Develop a Student Innovation Grant Program for students to design projects in conjunction with community agencies to benefit local citizens and the Alamance County community. 4. Develop a new student-led, first year student summer experience: Spirituality Quest. 5. Transition “Burst the Bubble” program (upper-class students teaching non-credit courses) from Dean Rich to Student Life for Winter Term 2008. INTEGRATION OF IN-AND-OUT-OF CLASS LEARNING 6. In conjunction with Academic Council, develop a statement defining the appropriate relationship between co-curricular activities, coursework and how students spend their time. 7. Open six new learning communities in The Colonnades: Collective Action & Responsibility, Environmental Sustainability, Business, La Maison Francaise, Deutsches Haus, and La Casa Italiana. 8. Work with new Dean of Career Services and Student Transitions and Director of Alumni Relations to implement recommendations of the Senior Year Transition Committee report. 9. Coordinate efforts through the Council of Civic Engagement to raise campus awareness of and participation in the political process and key issues surrounding the national elections. 10. Involve current student life staff and alumni in Career Services graduate fair to provide information about graduate school and work in the field of student affairs and higher education. 11. Work with Service Learning Advisory Council to recruit first cohort and prepare for implement of proposed three year Service Scholars Program.
CAMPUS CLIMATE AND COMMUNITY 12. Finalize three year strategic plan to expand the role of the Multicultural Center. 13. Complete/begin implementation of recommendations of Presidential Task Force on Alcohol Use. 14. Develop a plan to create a spaced on the lawn west of Moseley to encourage forums and displays of civic engagement and student expressions regarding social issues. 15. Design a meditation garden with benches adjacent to Holt Chapel with an area designated to serve as a memorial for deceased students. 16. Further strengthen partnerships between the University and the Town of Elon to create a model for town/gown relationships, emphasizing student awareness of their roles and responsibilities as “good neighbors.” 17. Expand the Center for Leadership’s youth program, “Leadership Turrentine,” to two more middle schools for the summer of 2007 and develop a high school component for the fall of 2008, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and the Alamance County Community College. The new program name is “Alamance Youth Leadership Academy.” 18. Explore new service-learning courses and volunteer experiences in Cambodia and Morocco. 19. Conduct feasibility study to establish satellite office of the Kernodle Center for Service Learning in the east Burlington community in partnership with community service agencies.
OUTSTANDING FACILITIES/ENGAGED RESIDENTIAL CAMPUS 20. Plan for and Provide Outstanding Facilities:
SERVICES 21. Reduce patient wait time by implementing an appointment structure in Health Services to supplement the walk-in system. 22. Review divisional communications with and programming for parents, including review of websites, parent orientation programs, and parent contacts, etc. 23. Extend campus shuttle schedule to include stops at the new malls and a grocery store. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ASSESSMENT and PLANNING 24. Implement an annual staff workshop with a regional or national leader in Student Affairs. 25. Increase student life staff publications via: a workshop on writing for publication; a research and writing group; and supporting staff “mini-sabbaticals” for research and writing grants/articles. 26. Publish and distribute to the campus an Executive Summary of Student Life programs. 27. Participate with Student Affairs leaders in ANAC to articulate and assess student learning outcomes in co-curricular programs and best practices for achieving them. 28. Review programs/events in division and in departments to increase focus on priorities, spread workload for events, “archive” low priority programs, and use technology to improve efficiency.
