Goal 1: Enhance Academic Excellence

ATTRACT, DEVELOP AND RETAIN AN EXCELLENT FACULTY

  • Create faculty development programs to fund course development, scholarly research and sabbatical opportunities
  • Promote the teacher-scholar model and celebrate faculty achievements
  • Reduce the percentage of classes taught by part-time faculty toward 15%
  • Use research and discussions from the Academic Summit to increase academic challenge and enhance learning at Elon
  • Develop faculty salary goals using the new Peer/Aspirant lists

ADVANCE THE CENTRALITY OF THE ARTS AND SCIENCES AS THE FOUNDATION OF AN ELON EDUCATION

  • Increase the number of students with majors in the arts and sciences toward 50
  • Continue to attract outstanding faculty applicants with Phi Beta Kappa credentials
  • Continue the commitment to meet Phi Beta Kappa criteria and resubmit application
    in 2006
  • Complete the Academic Village for the Arts and Sciences

STRENGTHEN CAMPUS DIVERSITY

  • Continue efforts to internationalize the campus
    - Provide resources to increase the number of international students to 125
    - Continue to attract international faculty and staff
    - Develop programs that attract to campus international leaders in business, religion, academics, politics and the arts
  • Review and expand programs that will attract and retain a diverse student body, faculty and staff
  • Expand the role of the Multicultural Center

ESTABLISH THE CENTER FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AS A NATIONAL MODEL PROMOTING ENGAGED LEARNING

  • Fund four additional scholars for the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL).
  • Award Innovation and Creativity Grants to students, faculty and staff to pursue ideas that promote engaged teaching and learning
  • Lead and participate nationally in teaching/learning discussions
  • Complete Belk pavilion in the Academic Village for CATL for fall 2007

DEEPEN THE ELON EXPERIENCES:

  • INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
    - Create one or more new International Study Centers similar to London and Costa Rica (e.g. Australia, Italy, …)
    Develop additional study abroad courses that promote cultural immersion and foreign language development
  • UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
    - Support undergraduate research in becoming a nationally recognized program
    - Significantly increase undergraduate research participation
    - Develop international research experiences for students and faculty
  • INTERNSHIPS
    - Develop international internship experiences
  • SERVICE LEARNING
    - Expand the number of domestic and international service-learning courses and volunteer experiences
    - Explore the creation of a Service Learning Scholars Program consisting of courses and experiences through which cohorts of students progress to become agents for positive change in their communities.
  • LEADERSHIP
    - Investigate possibility of domestic, senior capstone projects for Leadership Fellows
  • Ensure that Elon Experiences complement and deepen disciplinary content
  • Establish National Program Sites in one or more major US cities to create additional student opportunities for internship, service, leadership, and research experiences (e.g. Washington, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, …)
  • FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE ELON EXPERIENCES
    - Provide substantial new scholarships to enable as many students as possible to afford international study
    - Provide student engagement grants to support collaboration of students, faculty and staff on academic, civic engagement, service, leadership and internship experiences
    - Provide additional resources to support student/faculty research and related presentations

ACHIEVE STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE IN GRADUATE EDUCATION

  • Complete the establishment of the Elon University School of Law
    - Reach full 3-year enrollment goal of 300+ students
    - Attain ABA accreditation
  • Complete a feasibility study for a possible graduate program in communications

ATTRACT, DEVELOP AND RETAIN AN EXCELLENT STAFF

  • Expand support for staff professional development opportunities to make presentations, to publish and to serve in leadership roles in professional associations
  • Develop staff salary goals using the new Peer/Aspirant lists
  • Create a staff intern program

ENHANCE ELON’S TRADITION OF COMMUNITY

  • Bring attention to and expand university traditions
  • Broaden university efforts to be a responsible corporate citizen
    - Develop and begin implementing a comprehensive environmental sustainability plan for the Elon campus
  • Expand partnerships with local school systems and community agencies
  • Create additional informal meeting/social spaces for student events
  • Develop and implement a more comprehensive campus safety and security program
