QUESTION 1: What steps can the Writing Excellence Initiative take to help students improve their writing?
“I think a big step is what you are doing and that is getting the word out. We have had Paul come to our department meeting to share with our faculty.”

QUESTION 2: What are the most important steps the Writing Excellence Initiative can take to help you with the writing you assign in your classes?
“Offering workshops and small groups sessions; maybe book clubs too. I might even suggest some short tutorials that are online and could be watched. I also think having little prizes is good too; people are very busy and so the incentive is helpful.”

QUESTION 3: What are the most important steps the Writing Excellence Initiative can take to help you with your writing?
“This might be a silly suggestion; but could there be set aside times for writing just like we do for advising. A special day each month or something like that. Could we have a person assigned to each of the schools or departments for support or questions; just like we have a librarian for schools.”

QUESTION 1: What steps can the Writing Excellence Initiative take to help students improve their writing?
“1) Encourage and require attention to true, actual revision.
2) Improve and use true collaborative writing (not the typical ‘divide the task and paste it together’ strategy.  I think both of these can be critically important in meeting the first defined goal of ‘writing to learn.’”

QUESTION 2: What are the most important steps the Writing Excellence Initiative can take to help you with the writing you assign in your classes?
“1) Tips and strategies for providing useful, but efficient, feedback on student writing (for grades or not).
2) Strategies/best practices for getting students to apply feedback on one writing assignment to other writing assignments (not just on a next draft of a particular assignment).
3) Strategies/best practices for teaching collaborative writing.”

QUESTION 1: What steps can the Writing Excellence Initiative take to help students improve their writing?
"As an instructor of strategic PR writing, I find the things most lacking in students are 1) understanding of basic grammar because it hasn't been taught since junior high, and 2) they need to understand that writing a document is the first half of any assignment. The second half is editing it. In the classroom and the work world, a big problem is that students and young associates won't spend time with a document. Once they create the first draft, they think it is done."

QUESTION 1: What steps can the Writing Excellence Initiative take to help students improve their writing?
"In looking at my students' writing I think that students struggle with audience and purpose for writing.  Too often students’ writing reflects writing for a grade rather than thinking about other purposes for writing.  This leads to the second problem that the writing assumes the only audience is the professor.  I have explicitly taught about both concepts, yet students continue writing more as demonstration of knowledge for the professor.  This suggests to me this is an issue that is more systematic than bound in my courses alone."

QUESTION 2: What are the most important steps the Writing Excellence Initiative can take to help you with the writing you assign in your classes?
"I would like to see the general curriculum across campus develop and encourage writing as a process not a product in thinking about the overall initiative.  In particular, I am interested in ideas and strategies for generating more authentic writing tasks that are reflective of disciplinary discourses."

QUESTION 3: What are the most important steps the Writing Excellence Initiative can take to help you with your writing?
"I would like more opportunities and structure similar to the CATL writing residencies. I feel interdisciplinary activity around writing would benefit me and the broader university."

QUESTION 1: What steps can the Writing Excellence Initiative take to help students improve their writing?
"Getting students to think about writing more.  Not just more quantity, but spend more thoughtful time thinking about their writing and getting feedback to help them improve their writing.  Often so much of the writing that is done does not get reflected on (both by staff and students)."

QUESTION 2: What are the most important steps the Writing Excellence Initiative can take to help you with the writing you assign in your classes?
"The most important step is the idea that it is the QEP - it is making writing a focus.  Other ways to help would be giving ideas on how to give feedback to students about their writing, especially when the writing is not for a grade."

QUESTION 3: What are the most important steps the Writing Excellence Initiative can take to help you with your writing?
"Offer brief classes for faculty and staff to improve our writing.  Giving specific tips and then prompts to practice would be helpful.  Different classes could be around topics such as "expressive" writing, "speech" writing, or "memo" writing to name just a few."
