Dean's Message

This semester has been one exciting “first” after another for me. My first fall in Elon. My first Family weekend and school advisory board meeting. My first Elon Homecoming weekend. The affinity our alumni, students, faculty and staff have for this university and its people inspires me—and motivates me—every day.

As we close out 2018, it is a time to celebrate our achievements, while also taking a look to our future. There are too many to name from 2018, but here are a few highlights:

  • Rachel Hobbs ’18 was named a finalist for PRWeek’s Outstanding Student of the Year award

  • Elon News Network secured a national Pacemaker award

  • Our cinema students had their Coca-Cola commercial shown nationally in Regal Cinemas

  • A sports management team placed in a national analytics case competition

  • Stephanie Hays ’18 and Alex Toma ’20 earned four awards in the 2018 Michigan State University Design Contest for College Students

  • Alejandro Ramos ’19, a strategic communications major, and his interdisciplinary team won the HanesBrand International Analytics case competition

  • Professor Vic Costello’s new documentary received a BEA Best of Show prize

So, where is the School of Communications headed in 2019? To borrow a phrase from J McMerty ’00, Elon in Los Angeles program director, we want to continue to build our “Elon Empire.” We want to infuse more data analytics and greater understanding of the business side of our industries into the curriculum, enhance mentoring between alumni, students and industry leaders, and provide additional funding for student productions and travel to industry events. And we need your help.

We need you, our alumni, to be ambassadors advocating for and advancing Elon wherever you go and as you grow. Advocate by sharing how Elon positively impacted your life and your career. We all need to be Elon ambassadors and share our experiences, encouraging more young people to attend. And we need you to advance Elon by giving back so that others can have the scholarships, engaged learning and opportunities you did. Give financially regularly, but also offer your time and your expertise. Your role as an engaged alum, serving as an ambassador who advocates for Elon, will help us continue to build our reputation and deliver on a promise of excellence.

May the new year bring you closer to your personal and professional goals, and I hope you find a time during the next calendar year to come visit us “under the oaks.”

Sincerely,

Rochelle L. Ford, dean
School of Communications
