The leadership team works together to uphold the mission and purpose of the LGBTQIA Alumni Network, including engaging LGBTQIA Alumni. The team meets quarterly to facilitate the leadership and direction of the network and hold their positions for one year. Bud Harrelson '99 - President
Bud recently joined Elon’s LGBTQIA Alumni Network board, and will serve as the Network’s communications chair for this year. Bud used he, him, and his pronouns. Bud is a Ph.D in Education student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on creating safe and welcoming environments for LGBTQIA students, educators, and parents / guardians. Prior to returning to school full-time, Bud served as the director of school improvement for the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County Schools. He’s possesses experience across the pre-K through 12 grade span as a teacher, curriculum facilitator, school leader, academic coach, and gifted and talented program director. At Elon, Bud majored in chemistry and science education. In addition to his advocacy work with the LGBTQIA Alumni Network, Bud serves as the treasurer for Safe Schools NC – a non-profit dedicated to supporting teachers and principals as they work to create safe learning environments for all students and employees, especially those who identify as LGBTQIA. Bud enjoys taking long walks with his black lab, Brody.
Neil Smith '95
Neil lives in Greensboro North Carolina and works at Bayada Home Health Care as a Client Services Manager. Neil also serves on the Board of Governors for the Human Rights Campaign’s Triangle NC Steering Committee. In addition to LGBTQIA advocacy, Neil enjoys reading, cooking, swimming and travel. Originally from Roanoke Virginia, Neil grew up on the family farm but has since lived in New York, San Francisco and has called North Carolina home since 2002.
Ashley Fowler '14
Ashley currently lives in Washington, DC where she serves as the Program Coordinator for the Human Rights Campaign's international initiative, HRC Global. While at Elon, as an Honors Fellow and Lumen Scholar, Ashley completed an extensive three-year research project examining the development of LGBT rights in Central and Eastern Europe. She is excited to join the LGBTQIA Alumni Network's Leadership Team and looks forward to using her previous experiences and current position to advance the LGBTQIA Elon Alumni Network.
Ben Smith '09
Ben Smith is a 2009 graduate in Elementary Education. Ben has been a part of the the LGBTQIA Alumni Leadership Team for a number of years and oversees Homecoming activities.
Michael Bumbry '07 - Past President
Michael Bumbry is an Assistant Director of Annual Giving at the University of Chicago, where he is responsible for managing the 45th and 50th class reunions for the undergraduate program. Bumbry is also a Ph.D. candidate in the higher education program at Loyola University Chicago, examining the influence of race/ethnicity on Latin@ philanthropy at predominantly White institutions. Michael currently serves at President of the LGBTQIA Alumni Network, having previously served as Vice President and Awards and Recognition Chair.
