The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, also known as the Buckley Amendment, helps protect the privacy of student records. The Act provides for the right to inspect and review educational records, to seek to amend those records, and to limit disclosure of information from the records. The Act applies to all institutions that are the recipients of federal funding.

As it relates to the Bursar’s office and tuition related bills, parents of a dependent student as defined by the Internal Revenue Code for income tax purposes may have access to the students' financial records. It is the position of the University that an undergraduate student is a dependent of his or her parents. In the event this is not the case, the student must give written notice to the Bursar’s office that he or she is not a dependent.
