University Milestones: 2011-12

From new facilities and groundbreaking scholarly research to distinguished speakers and outstanding performances on the field and on stage, the 2011-12 academic year yielded myriad accomplishments and marked the beginning of bold initiatives at Elon. The following timeline highlights some of the year’s major milestones. 


June


The Elon University School of Law receives full accreditation by the American Bar Association, certifying that the school is in full compliance with all ABA standards for the approval of law schools. Read more. Read more…


 

UNC standout Charlotte Smith becomes Elon's new head women's basketball coach, after spending nine years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, UNC-Chapel Hill, where she had an All-American career topped by a last-second shot that earned UNC the national title in 1995. Read more…

 

 

Elon University revises its Teaching Fellows program following action by the North Carolina General Assembly to phase out funding for the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. The new Elon fellows program recruits outstanding students nationally as well as those from North Carolina who want to pursue careers in education. Read more…





 


July

Elon University’s sales program in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business is named a “Top University Sales Program for 2011”by the Sales Education Foundation, a component of The Dayton Foundation nonprofit established to promote university level educational programs in sales through the provision of scholarships, the creation of educational materials and other methods. Read more…

 

 
Dozens of students present their research on campus as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences, an eight-week program inwhich scholars work full-time on a project in collaboration with faculty mentors. Read more…

August

President Leo M. Lambert participates in a panel discussion at the White House to kick off President Barack Obama’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. For the ninth year in a row, Elon is ranked among the nation's 376 top colleges and universities by The Princeton Review. The 2012 college guide, released Aug. 1, also ranks Elon’s study abroad program as #4 in the nation, and Elon’s theater program as #15.  Read more…

 

 

 

Elon's Phoenix athletics program places 198 student-athletes on the Southern Conference's 2010-11 Academic Honor Roll. Elon had the third highest number of honorees among the conference's 12 colleges and universities. Read more…

 

For the third consecutive year, the Sierra Club ranks Elon University one of the nation’s top 100 “greenest universities.” The ranking recognizes schools in 10 categories that include academics, waste management, energy efficiency, food, purchasing, transportation, financial and other factors. Read more…

 

 


 

 

The National Science Foundation awards Elon $1.2 million to bolster the number of math and science teachers Elon University graduates in the years ahead through a partnership with the Alamance-Burlington School System. Read more…

Elon University launches a new lifelong education program designed for people aged 50 and older. The learning institute, called LIFE@ELON, features weekly presentations conducted in interactive format and is led by current and retired Elon faculty and staff members and other area educators. Read more…
