Mona EdwardsVice President and Chief of Staff

Edwards has over 20 years of combined experience in government, management, and the legal and leadership fields. Before joining the Center for Creative Leadership, Edwards served as the Deputy/Assistant City Manager for the City of Greensboro. In that capacity, she was second in command for the City and was responsible for over 1100 employees via supervision of several departments. Prior to her nine years with the City, she worked at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as an Equal Affirmative/Action Compliance Officer. She also practiced law in Virginia for five years, initially with The Legal Aid Society and thereafter in private practice.

Edwards is Vice President and Chief of Staff in the Office of the President at the Center for Creative Leadership® located in Greensboro, NC. In this position, she provides oversight for the Advancement and Education and Non-Profit Groups (ENP). Advancement is charged with obtaining grants, third party funding and donations for scholarships, research and programs to strengthen the Center’s reach. ENP provides leadership solutions to K-12 and school district administrators as well as college student leaders, university administrators and non-profit clients.
As Chief of Staff, Edwards works with the President and Executive Team of CCL® in enterprise planning, policy development, project management and problem solving. She provides leadership on select enterprise projects including executive searches. She assists the President in writing and editing various messages and communications, planning key visitor meetings and events, Board activities, and maintaining contact with various constituents. She serves as an Ombudsman within the organization and the community.

Edwards supports the President in agenda planning for the Board of Governor’s quarterly meetings, recruitment and orientation of new Governors, and in providing periodic communications to the Board. She also serves as Secretary to the Board, a role that includes certifying various corporate actions, and related duties.

Edwards holds a J.D. degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law and a B.A. degree from the University of Virginia. She completed the Management Development Institute at Virginia Tech University and the Municipal Administration course at the University of North Carolina Institute of Government. Additionally, she attended the Coaching for Greater Effectiveness, Developing the Strategic Leader, and (former) LeaderLab programs at CCL.

Edwards is a member of the Virginia State Bar (Associate), the Women’s Professional Forum, and is a graduate of Leadership Greensboro and Other Voices. She is involved in a number of community activities and serves on the Boards of the United Way of Greensboro (Community Investment Council), the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro (Executive Committee, Chair of Marketing Committee), Action Greensboro Core Committee (Co-Chair Leadership Development, Public Education Task Force), and Communities-in-Schools of Greater Greensboro.
