The Office of Cultural & Special Programs
Elon University offers a rich and varied program of artistic cultural events that complement and support the thriving academic programs in art, dance, literature, music and theatre. Special lectures and presentations on timely topics support a broad range of curricular and co-curricular learning and enhance the overall academic climate and level of campus discourse. The Elon University Lyceum Series, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lecture, the Elon Common Reading Lecture, and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professor of Leadership are established and anticipated annual programs. Significant occasions such as convocations and commencements are also important traditions for the campus community. All of these events as well as other occasions are planned and executed through the Office of Cultural and Special Programs.
Recent campus speakers include two former Secretaries of State, Madeleine Albright and General Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former president George H.W. Bush, Queen Noor of Jordan, former Prime Minister of England Margaret Thatcher, renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, Walter Cronkite, George Will and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
In 2009-2010, special guests will include doctor and author Khaled Hosseini, former press secretary DeeDee Myers, and American poet C.K. Williams. Performances by Step Afrika, Nagata Shachu and Paragon Ragtime Orchestra will feature creative approaches to traditions in dance, music and cinema. Individual recitals and ensemble concerts by Jeanne Stark, Ian Hobson, Borealis Wind Quintet and the American Chamber Players will provide intimate opportunities to engage with classical performance.
