The Office of Cultural & Special Programs

Elon University offers a rich and varied program of artistic cultural events that complement and support the thriving programs in art, dance, literature, music and theatre. Special lectures and presentations on timely topics support a broad range of curricular and co-curricular learning and enhance the overall academic climate and level of campus discourse. The Elon University Lyceum Series, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lecture, the Elon Common Reading Lecture, and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professor of Leadership are established and anticipated annual programs. Significant occasions such as convocations and commencements are important traditions for the campus community. All of these events as well as other occasions are planned and executed through the Office of Cultural and Special Programs.

Recent campus speakers include two former Secretaries of State, Madeleine Albright and General Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former president George H.W. Bush, Queen Noor of Jordan, former Prime Minister of England Margaret Thatcher, renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, Walter Cronkite, George Will and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

In 2010, special guests include former press secretary Dee Dee Myers, Pulitzer Prize author Michael Chabon, and NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg. Performances by nicholas leichter dance, the Ciompi Quartet, and Zzyzx Saxophone Quartet will feature creative approaches to traditions in dance and music. Individual recitals and ensemble concerts by William Chapman Nyaho, Ian Hobson and the American Chamber Players will provide intimate opportunities to engage with classical performance. Elon's varied faculty and student ensembles and performance companies complete the season with excellence and enthusiasm.
