Students enrolled in ARH 341 'Then and Now in West Africa' organize an art exhibition curated along the theme of the course and incorporate works from the collections at Elon and Guilford College. By juxtaposing so-called “traditional” and contemporary African art, the exhibition will consider cultural practices within certain ethnic groups and how these have informed contemporary artists’ styles, subject matter and conceptual framework. In so doing, the exhibition will explore “authentic” art and commodity, cross-cultural exchange, patronage, appropriation and the impact of Western expectations.

Moving Visuals is contemporary dance at its best featuring the 2012-13 Elon Dance Company performing original and exciting choreography by Larry Keigwin, NYC Guest Artist, Jan Van Dyke, Regional Guest Artist and faculty. Admission: $12 or Elon ID. Tickets available April 18.

Vendetta Mathea & Company of Aurillac, France is the Department of Performing Arts 2013 International Guest Artist. While in residence, members will give master classes and attend rehearsals with Elon dance students. In a special program on Saturday, the company performs an hour long ballet entitled Homme/Animal. Admission: $12 or Elon ID. Tickets available April 18. Note: Guests with tickets to a Moving Visuals performance (May 9-11, 2013) will receive complimentary admission to this performance.
