Elon scores among nation's top colleges and universities in 2006 National Survey of Student Engagement

NSSE logo For the seventh year in a row, Elon University has scored among the nation's top colleges and universities in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The survey, the most comprehensive assessment of effective practices in higher education, includes data from 260,000 students at 523 four-year colleges and universities.  About 95 percent of Elon respondents rated their college experience as excellent or good, compared with a national average of 87 percent. Elon students also gave high marks to their experiences on each of five benchmarks of excellence:

Level of academic challenge
Active and collaborative learning
Student-faculty interaction
Enriching educational experiences
Supportive campus environment

A total of 720 Elon freshmen and seniors participated in the NSSE 2006 survey.

Based on survey results of freshmen, Elon had its highest scores in the following categories:

Number of papers and reports between 5 and 19 pages in length
Number of papers and reports of fewer than 5 pages
Making class presentations
Completing foreign language coursework
Spending more than five hours/week participating in co-curricular activities

Based on survey results of seniors, Elon had its highest scores in these categories:

Working with classmates outside of class on assignments
Participating in community service or volunteer work
Studying abroad
Completing a capstone senior experience
Spending more than five hours/week participating in co-curricular activities

The 2006 NSSE report, which is sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, was released Nov. 13. The study provides information to students and parents in the college search process and gives campuses insight into effective teaching and student learning.
