NC Campus Compact Summer Associates are first-generation college students who serve as AmeriCorps*VISTAs for a summer term of service on college campuses across the state. The program launched in 2009 and is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Summer Associates work at various university and community partner offices as they support and implement programs and initiatives centered around one main objective: to provide support to K-12 summer mentoring or bridge programs, as well as programs designed to promote college access and success for underrepresented or underserved populations. Unlike traditional VISTAs, Summer Associates serve in a broader context, allowing them to perform and volunteer in both indirect and direct service.
Goals & Objectives of Summer Associate Program
Summer Associates will:
• Build on existing success in college.
• Integrate their summer experience into their work goals.
• Gain skills and knowledge to help complete college and enter workforce.
• Learn how to use challenge as an opportunity for growth.
• Foster mentoring skills so that Summer Associates can mentor freshmen first generation college students.
"When I first began my internship, the work in the office seemed impossible for me to do. I was intimidated by the work, and wasn't confident at all. As I attempted to do the work and asked my supervisors one hundred and one questions, I got the hang of it. There were times when I didn't have anyone else in the office with me, and I still continued to complete my work. At first when I found out we were going to be evaluated, I expected the worst because in the beginning of my internship I wasn't confident at all. I thought everyone could see straight through me, and how scared/nervous I was. I really lacked self-confidence in the office. However, when I was evaluated, I was seen by my supervisors as someone who always completed tasks and got the work done. I was shocked. I hadn't realized how good of a job I had been doing, and how hard I was being on myself. I am not fully secure as an employee or even a college student, but I'm not afraid to learn anymore!"
