NC Campus Compact Summer Associates are undergradaute college students who serve as AmeriCorps*VISTAs for a summer term of service on college campuses across the state. Emphasis is placed on recruiting first and second year, low income or first-generation students. The Compact sponsored a Summer Associates program from 2009-2011 and again in 2014. The program is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Summer Associates work at various university and community partner offices to support full-year VISTAs programs and initiatives. Unlike traditional, full-year VISTAs who carry out program and organizational development through capacity-building activities, Summer Associates may perform both direct and indirect community service.
In 2014, 18 Summer Associates support projects at 7 host sites:
East Carolina University's Campus Kitchen
Elon University's Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement
Marian Cheek Jackson Center
North Carolina Campus Compact College Positive Project
The Partnership for Appalachian Girls' Eduation (PAGE)
Wake Forest University's Campus Kitchen
Western Carolina University's Campus Kitchen Garden
All summer associates work with programs designed to prevent summer learning loss and increase academic engagement among low-income youth or and/or promote the USDA Summer Food Service Program or similar summer feeding programs.
Through their summer service experience, Summer Associates will:
Develop knowledge of poverty-related issues
Gain "career-ready" skills and competencies in community engagement
Learn to use challenges as an opportunity for growth
Learn to apply their Summer Associate experience to other jobs
