An Invitation to Service Learning
Welcome to “Invitation to Service Learning,” a video highlighting best practices of North Carolina faculty who have made significant contributions in the field of service-learning and community engagement. Prepared in honor of the Compact’s tenth year anniversary, the video features six faculty who have received the statewide Robert L. Sigmon Service-Learning Award, named in honor of the North Carolina native and service-learning pioneer.
The video features awardees Dr. Betsy Alden, Service-Learning Coordinator, Duke University (2006); Dr. Rachel Willis, Associate Professor of American Studies, UNC – Chapel Hill (2007); Dr. Cheryl Brown, Professor of Sociology, Greensboro College (2008); Pam Kiser, Professor of Human Service Studies (2009); Dr. Michele Gillespie, Associate Provost for Academic Initiatives and Kahle Family Professor of History, Wake Forest University (2010); and Dr. Della Pollock, Bank of America Term Professor, UNC-Chapel Hill (2011).
NC Campus Compact member institutions, the awardees, Mr. Sigmon and "The Marian Cheek Jackson Center for Saving and Making History" shared their photographs for the video, providing images of the diversity of community engagement work being done by North Carolina higher education institutions. Faculty awardees share how they have built strong reciprocal campus-community relationships, as well as how course content and community service enhance one another, and the impact students make in communities.
