Outstanding AmeriCorps Service Award

This award is presented to an ADVANCE AmeriCorps member whose contribution of time, service and support goes the extra mile to positively impact their mentee (s) and/or service site. The winner will receive a $100 cash award.   Between 2009 and 2011 this recognition was awarded to an NC-ACTS! AmeriCorps member.

2012 Award Winner (Virginia) - Allison Reeves, Virginia Wesleyan College

Service Site:  Bayside Elementary School through the Marlin Reads program which matches one VWC student with a 1st grader who is struggling to read.

  • Helps Coordinate Marlin Reads at three school sites involving 27 college mentors
  • Mentors a 1st grade boy weekly
  • Volunteers regularly to assist in her mentee's class.  She involved his class in a service project -Valentines for Veteran's - where the children made Valentines and delivered them to the Norfolk Veterans Center.
  • Created "team spirit" activities where the 1st graders and their mentors created their own Marlin Reads t-shirts and bookmarks.
  • Facilitated "Chalk the Walk" where all the mentors and mentees at at Bayside wrote on the school's sidewalk about how they loved reading. 
  • Drives the van each week to Bayside for all the VWC volunteers 

2012 Award Winner (North Carolina) - Tiffany Francis, Wake Technical Community College
Service Site: RBC Bank Learning Center at Heritage (Communities in Schools of Wake County)

  • Regularly mentors multiple students at the site
  • Recruited her family members (mother and uncle) to support the Center and the over 45 youth they serve, including serving as chaperones on the weekend trips sponsored by the Center. 
  • She and her family have provided resources for the youth served by the Center including Christmas gifts and $300 in food donations.
