The 2007 brainchild of Dr. Prudence Layne, the Adopt-A-Student Program started by pairing a child at the Ekukhanyisweni Primary School (EPS) in Alexandra, South Africa with a sponsor in the United States who agreed to help fund a child’s education for one year.
‘Ekukhanyisweni’ is the Zulu word for “place of light” and the school lives up to its name. Although the new facility opened in January 2007, the school's twenty-five teachers do their best to work amidst the severe overcrowding in their classrooms, with each often serving more than forty students. As one can imagine, resources are strained and it is a challenge to meet the overwhelming needs of the more than 1000 students who call the school home and truly make this a “place of light.”
In an effort to reach more students and maximize resources, we have been forced to move away from a direct one-to-one model, and amass each sponsor’s pledge so that we can work with our network of wholesalers to provide school supplies, shoes, and uniforms to as many students as funds allow. With its continued growth, South Africa Study Abroad (SASA) alums are recognizing the value of creating a more sustainable, long-term partnership that focuses on professional development opportunities for teachers (see the Adopt-a-Classroom description for more details) and programs like the Global Links Library and Literacy Campaign to improve reading competency and literacy.
As a result, the Adopt-a-Student program is getting a makeover. Donations of US $40 or any additional amount are welcome. However, most of the funds collected will be used to support students and teachers in particular classrooms at EPS.
To make a contribution, complete the Contributor form. After the funds are converted to the local currency, students enrolled in the South Africa winter term program will be assigned a classroom and teacher with whom they work to determine the needs of their classrooms and to identify particular students who may still benefit from one-to-one direct sponsorship. Please email the Contributor Form to email@example.com or send a hard copy via mail to 2338 Campus Box, Elon, NC 27244 with your check/money order made payable to Elon University/The Call of South Africa. Arrangements can be made for cash payments.
