SGA sponsors events as “Battle for the Saddle”
nears

“The Battle for the Saddle” will begin Oct. 24,
with a week full of western-themed homecoming activities
sponsored by the Student Government Association.
SGA said their mission was to create a theme that would be
memorable and provide for many creative angles. Many ideas
were suggested but the idea of “Battle for the
Saddle” best fit the criteria and became Elon’s
Homecoming theme.
“This year’s homecoming will be, by far, the best
Elon has ever seen,” said Bethany Massman, public
relations for SGA’s Homecoming Committee. “The
committee has been dedicated since day one to making this
event amazing. It is definitely a week you don’t want
to miss!”
Four new events will be introduced at this year’s
homecoming. The “Bash ‘em Up” philanthropy
event, held at 2 p.m. Oct. 24 will involve bashing a car
painted in Western Carolina’s colors. There will be a
fee of $1 to participate.
All proceeds obtained from the “Bash ‘em
Up” event and Penny Wars will go to the 2004 homecoming
philanthropy, Western Middle School. Western Middle School
will use the money to update their library with new books and
furniture.
SGA will sponsor midnight meals on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 3:00
p.m. and will provide western entertainment.
An alumni and student College Coffee will be held at the
Center for the Arts terrace at 3 p.m. Oct. 29. This will give
current Elon students the opportunity to converse with Elon
alumni.
A parade will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 29, following College
Coffee. The parade will feature the Fire of the Carolinas,
Elon Cheerleaders, homecoming teams, faculty and members of
the Elon community.
Returning homecoming events include Penny Wars, Quiz Bowl,
the Banner Contest, Skit Night, the pep-rally with fireworks
and the Elon Phoenix football game, where the King and Queen
of homecoming will be announced.
“I am looking forward to all the homecoming
events,” said sophomore Ashley Hawkes. Skit night is so
much fun. The fireworks are going to be awesome, I think they
will be a great addition to the pep rally.”
Students can obtain a homecoming packet in the SGA office,
located in Moseley 221A. The packet includes event
information and a schedule of times and locations. The packet
also includes information on forming a team of ten or more
people, including a faculty member, to participate in the
homecoming events.
This year a number of student athletes will not be able to
attend homecoming because they will be competing out of town.
SGA is making an effort to bring more alumni to this
year’s homecoming and to get greater community
involvement.
SGA has spent a considerable amount of time planning for
homecoming. The Homecoming Committee began planning this
year’s homecoming events in the spring of 2004.
